The newspaper quoted senior unnamed British defense sources as saying that the head of the Astute-class hunter-killer submarine armed with the Tomahawk nuclear cruise missile "sat quietly" within Iran's reach.
The source added that although there would not be a first strike, "every precaution is being taken, depending on how Iran reacts to Soleimani's death".
"If things unravel quickly, Britain will always stand shoulder to shoulder with the US. Hunter-killers are the most sophisticated submarines in the Royal Navy. They are a deadly asset and there is one well within Iran's reach, "the source pointed out.
The statement was issued after at least 50 British Special Air Service (SAS) troops were sent to Iraq to assist in the potential evacuation of British citizens after a US drone strike that killed General Qasem Soleimani, head of the elite Quds forces of the Iranian Shiite Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) .
Defense Minister Ben Wallace also ordered the sending of British warships to the Strait of Hormuz to "take all necessary steps to protect our ships and citizens" because Iran promised to retaliate after the killing of Soleimani.
