Cleanliness in Islam has an important position. The books of jurisprudence in Islam begin with the discussion of thaharah which means purity and cleanliness.
Cleanliness is the principle of the realization of health; one of the greatest blessings that Allah bestows on humans, as authentic hadith,
نِعْمَتَانِ مَغْبُونٌ فِيهِمَا كَثِيرٌ مِنْ النَّاسِ الصِّحَّةُ وَالْفَرَاغُ
"There are two favors that humans often neglect (loss) in which are health and leisure (opportunity)." (Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Ahmad)
Because of the importance of cleanliness, this religion positions it half of faith. That is, the demand for faith is to maintain cleanliness.
The Prophet sallallaahu 'Alaihi Wasallam said,
الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ
"Wash it half the faith." (Narrated by Muslim)
That is, the peak of the reward is doubled to half the reward of faith. Some say, the meaning of faith abolishes past sins, so does ablution. ' The reason is because ablution is not valid without faith. Because this faith must be called as half of it. And there are still some other opinions regarding this hadith.
Strengthening this meaning, many people postulate the famous hadith,
اَلنَّظَافَةُ مِنَ الْإِيْمَانِ
"Cleanliness is part of faith." (Narrated by Al-Tirmidzi)
Shaykh Abdul ‘Aziz ibn Abdullah bin Bazz rahimahullah mengimentari this hadith,
لكنه حديث ضعيف, ومعناه صحيح, معناه جاء في أحاديث أخرى, هذا الحديث رواه الترمذي بسند ضعيف, (النظافة من الإيمان), ولكن ليس سنده صحيحا, ولكن في المعنى جاء عن النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم- أن من شعب الإيمان إماطة الأذى عن الطريق
"But he is a hadith dhaif. It means saheeh (correct). The meaning is in other hadiths. This hadith is narrated by al-Tirmidhi with the sanad dhaif. (Cleanliness is part of faith) but the sanad is not valid. But in terms of meaning there is a hadith from the Prophet sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam that among branches of Faith is to get rid of interference from the road."
The Prophet sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam reported that he saw the reward of his people - when it was revealed to him - was someone who removed dirt from the mosque.
The Prophet sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam also said,
إِنَّ اللهَ جَمِيْلٌ يُحِبُّ الجَمَالَ
"Surely Allah is beautiful and likes beauty." From here, Allah shalat bathed his heart, took a bath while going to Friday prayers, and bathed the may. In this Shari'a there is a value of cleanliness.
Syaikh Bin Bazz rahimahullah explained the other meanings of al-Tathhir (purification), the purpose of the argument syar'i shows the command to maintain cleanliness of dirt. That a believer leaves no dirt on his clothes and body. But he should remove the dirt. Likewise when he is on the road, he removes harmful interference from the road so that the Muslims are not harmed because of that. Wallahu A'lam.
