Belgium Even Bans Halal Meat Production

TIMES OF ISLAM, TANJUNG ENIM - The Coordination Board of Islamic Institutions in Belgium filed a lawsuit against the law banning the production of halal meat in the Belgian region. The ban will come into force in 2020 in the Walloon and Flanders regions.

Reporting from Arab News on Wednesday, Muslim groups and Jews filed lawsuits against the ban. Both groups considered the regulation violated EU laws that guarantee religious freedom.

Politicians in the Walloon region passed the law in May 2017. In July 2017, politicians in Flanders also passed a similar law. Both of them face lawsuits to stop changes to the practice of slaughter according to the Shari'a that came into force.

The Islamic Institution Coordination Council in Belgium joins the Federation of Belgian Jewish Organizations, the European Jewish Congress and the World Jewish Congress to file lawsuits. The European Court of Human Rights has described halal massacre as an important aspect of Jewish religious practice.

The president of the Federation of Belgian Jewish Organizations, Yohan Benizri, considers the state to be giving an alarming political signal to Belgian Jews by defeating their right to exercise faith. He considered the state violating the important principle of the separation of church and state.

"It's very sad, but it's also haram. This is a violation of European legal norms, including the Charter of the European Union's Basic Rights. We hope this will be canceled. If this law comes into force, this will be a dark day for freedom in Belgium, "Benizri said.

Animals killed for consumption of halal and clean meat in Islam and Judaism must be done by cutting the animal's throat to drain blood.
